The Axis Deer, also called the Indian Deer, Spotted Deer, and the Chital Deer, is native to India and Sri Lanka. According to observers this deer is one of the most beautiful deer in the world. In most deer the beauty of the species depends on the quality of the antlers on the stags this is not true with the axis deer. Their beauty is in their coats, which are brown with a yellowish or reddish tinge with white spots that give it a speckled appearance, set off by the bright white under parts. Antlers on this axis deer are slender with few branches. In many areas this deer is also called the spotted deer.
Many consider the meat the best of all venison. Hunters purchase surplus does from game ranches and add them to their meat supply, just for the hides and meat.
